Subject: Diabetes Care in the School and Day Care Setting
There have been a few moms of children with diabetes that have had
problems with the child's school.  This might be of use to them, or
others who come here...

Subject: Re: Diabetes Care in the School and Day Care Setting
Thanks Kurt.  Still having trouble with our school.  I'm still going in at
lunchtime everyday to count carbs and do insulin as no one is willing to
learn how to do this.  The assistant principal agrees that I can't keep
doing this, not with a small baby and another small child.  His solution is
to teach my eldest daughter to do the injections!  She's 10, and is very
anxious about that idea.  She doesn't want to hurt her little sister, and I
don't think she should have to be responsible for that.  At first they
wanted Conner to do it.  She is 6, hasn't even been dx for 2 months yet, and
I'm just happy she's testing herself.  I guess their concern is liability
issues.  I can understand that, but if my eldest was giving the injections,
they would still have to draw it up.  Therefore, if they made a mistake with
the insulin, it would still be their fault.  Dammit, I had to learn
everything I needed to know in about 2 days, and they've had 2 months and
still don't really know that much.  The only thing they've really done is
send out an info sheet on my daughter, because during the first week of
school, one of the aides thought her case that she carries everywhere was
her lunch, and when she went to test herself was told to put it away.  She
had my girl crying before she was told by another STUDENT that Conner has
diabetes.  Talk about a huge lack of communication.  These people just
really piss me off.  Sorry, but I had to get that out!
Thanks for listening!

What you Shae to do is notify the principal that you are filing criminal
charges against him under the law,

Write to the US Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights and tell
them about the failure of the school to follow the disabilities law.

You should contact the REGIONAL office.  I donut know what region you
are in, but call the national office and ask them

That will get some action going,

Next, contact the children s disability advocates in your area,  Check
with the ACLU, and the Juvenile diabetes foundation as to whose local.

Drop me a line if you need more help finding people.

I have to agree that I do not want to alienate these people.  I'm putting my
daughter's life in their hands, and the last thing I need is resentment
towards me and her.  She has a hard enough time at school with this without
them feeling ill will towards her also.  I have to laugh at the assistant
principal though.  He's a type 2, and he just automatically assumed
everything was exactly the same with type 1.  He doesn't check himself at
all, and only gets two injections a day, so he assumed she would be that way
also.  Boy, did he get an eye-opener!
Thank you for allowing me to vent earlier.  Sometimes I feel like it's the
world against my daughter and I.  I feel much better now.

Your DAMN right she wants to "alienate" the staff

LEA's take advantage of people because of well meaning idiots like you

AFTER she lays down the law, her child will get proper treatment, as
long as she goes along with criminal behavior, she, and more important,
her child, will get screwed

You know, there is such a thing as pushing without litigating someone.  I'm
so sick of sue-happy people like you.  Nothing like alienating your entire
family from the community at large because I sued the school corporation.
Especially in a town where there are only about 20,000 people, and everyone
knows everyone else.

I don't know about that, hopefully Will will jump in here.
The school can claim that they are making a reasonable accommodation,
by allowing the mother to enter the school, daily to give the child
her injections.

No, that is NOT a "reasonable accommodation", and they would not even
TRY to make a stupid claim like that to the State department of
Education.  (after a single OCR report, the feds make the State go in.
They don't actually prosecute unless there are multiple complaints, or
it has already gone through the State due Process and investigation route)

BUT, she does not actually WANT a reasonable accommodation, she just
wants a place to whine, we cal that "child abuse"

Whilst not exactly on the same intensity level, I do think Ted's advice on
pushing may be the right thing to do. If you have to alienate the principal
but keep a good relationship with her teachers, your daughter should be
fine... I had to do something similar with a bully of a principal when my
eldest was little.

Nicky.

You *could* point out that they're missing the opportunity to educate
themselves.

Surely yours won't be the only diabetic child ever to go there?

If anyone, the Assistant Principal ought to understand that.

Living in a small town myself, I can attest to how underhanded and

Just because she doesn't want to implement your suggestions doesn't make

your approach will work in her circumstances.
